The Marathon Farmers’ Market is preparing to set up again on the village green on Main Street, with opening day expected the first Saturday in June, organizers said. The Saturday market has become a reliable place to find local food and handmade goods within walking distance of most neighborhoods, and early-season offerings should fit the calendar: greens, rhubarb and spring onions alongside breads, cookies and other baked treats.
Organizers said a mix of returning and new vendors have already signed on across familiar categories — fresh produce, baked goods, maple products, local honey, plants and seedlings, flowers and a range of crafts. Shoppers can also expect a few farm-based specialties that typically arrive as the season unfolds, like early berries and herbs, along with soaps, fiber arts and small woodcrafts made in the area. As in past years, the market will center on the shade of the green with tents set up around the walkways.
Market hours are expected to remain on Saturday mornings, with a morning-to-midday schedule similar to recent seasons. Exact times will be posted by organizers as opening day approaches. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on the market’s announcements later this month for final details and any weather-related updates.
There is still room for additional growers and makers from the region. Organizers said they are accepting applications for both seasonal and daily stalls, with a preference for items that are grown, raised or crafted locally. Backyard gardeners with surplus produce, small farms, bakers using home or commercial kitchens, maple producers, beekeepers and craft artisans are all welcome to inquire. Basic rules about product labeling and setup apply; applicants will receive guidelines with their forms.
To apply for a stall or ask questions about what’s eligible, organizers recommend contacting the Village of Marathon office, which can connect prospective vendors with the volunteer committee that runs the market. Application information will also be shared publicly ahead of opening day. Early inquiries help with layout on the green and ensure a smooth start to the season.
Parking is available along Main Street and nearby side streets, and neighbors are reminded to bring reusable bags. The market typically runs rain or shine, but any changes will be announced in advance.
If all goes to plan, the village green will be busy again on that first June Saturday — a weekly chance to pick up fresh food, see neighbors and support small businesses rooted along the Tioughnioga.
