Linda Smith named Woman of Distinction by Senator Lea Webb

Many of us in Marathon know Linda Smith as “Mrs. Smith,” a substitute teacher at Marathon Central High School since 2019. However, Mrs. Smith is much more than just the person you see in class when your teacher is out.

Smith spent her life advocating for working people in our community. She began her career at Pall Trinity in Cortland in 1987 and quickly became active with UAW Local 1326. She held many roles in the union, including union president. Smith was known for pushing for improvements in workplace safety and educating workers on job hazards.

In 1995, Smith established the Cortland Workers’ Rights Board with other UAW locals. The organization helped hundreds of workers before closing in 2004.

Smith then transferred to public service as chief of staff to Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton from 2004 to 2017, when she retired.

This life of activism and public service led her to be named the 2026 Woman of Distinction in Senate District 52 by NY State Senator Lea Webb. She was honored in a ceremony held earlier this month in Albany.

Senator Webb said of Smith, “Linda Smith has spent her life standing up for working people and strengthening her community in lasting ways…Her advocacy has helped ensure that workers are treated with fairness and respect, and her commitment to others continues to make a real difference.”

This is an amazing recognition of a local town figure and a highlight of the impact she has made on our community.

Congratulations, Mrs. Smith!
