Marathon's Business Future Brightens with Key Investments

Marathon’s business landscape is poised for a significant uplift as new state funding, totaling $4.5 million from the NY Forward grant program, begins to take shape. The approval, announced by Governor Kathy Hochul’s office on May 13, 2026, marks a pivotal moment for economic development and community revitalization, with several projects directly aimed at strengthening Marathon’s commercial sector.

Among the most anticipated developments are substantial investments in local businesses. A sum of $1.2 million has been allocated to renovate the former IMTS building. This project is designed to enable a growing tool manufacturing business to expand its operations right here in Marathon, which is expected to create new job opportunities for residents. Additionally, a corner building located at Main and Broome streets will receive $183,000 for renovations, transforming it into a new coffee shop and bakery, adding a fresh destination for community members and visitors alike. Further supporting Main Street, a $300,000 fund has been established to encourage smaller mixed-use and commercial property improvements, including storefront renovations, upgrades to upper-floor housing, and equipment purchases for local businesses.

Village of Marathon Mayor Scott Chamberlin expressed gratitude for the state's investment, emphasizing its crucial role in the village's ongoing growth and improvement. Mayor Chamberlin noted that these projects are designed to support local industry, fortify Main Street businesses, and help the village advance its goals as a pro-housing community. The broader vision includes enhancing the retail sector and connecting the vibrant activity of Main Street to the natural beauty of the Tioughnioga Riverfront.

Complementing these exciting new developments, the Marathon Farmers' Market continues to be a cornerstone of local business activity during the warmer months. Operating weekly on Saturday mornings from 9 AM to 12 PM on the Village Green, the market offers a diverse array of local products. Shoppers can find local meats, farm eggs, homemade breads, seasonal flowers, and handcrafted goods from regional vendors. In the event of poor weather, the market thoughtfully moves indoors to the Civic Center, ensuring continuous access to these local treasures. This ongoing market activity, coupled with the new grant-funded projects, paints a promising picture for Marathon’s business community and its future prosperity.
