Marathon is set to experience a significant economic uplift with the recent approval of six transformational projects, fully funded by a $4.5 million NY Forward grant. The announcement from Governor Kathy Hochul's office on May 12-13, 2026, marks a pivotal moment for the village, advancing plans first initiated with the grant award in March 2025. These projects are specifically designed to bolster economic development, enhance downtown revitalization, and foster new opportunities for local businesses.
At the heart of this economic surge is a $1.2 million investment dedicated to renovating the former IMTS building. This significant funding will support the expansion of operations for a growing tool manufacturing business, bringing new jobs and strengthening Marathon’s industrial presence within the community. Further enhancing the village’s commercial landscape, $183,000 has been allocated to transform a prominent corner building at Main and Broome streets into a vibrant new coffee shop and bakery. This promises to be a welcome addition for residents and visitors alike, offering a fresh gathering place in the heart of Marathon.
In a move to empower a broader range of local enterprises, an additional $300,000 has been designated for a small project fund. This fund is designed to support various mixed-use and commercial property improvements across the village. These improvements could include storefront renovations, upgrades to upper-floor housing, essential equipment purchases for businesses, and even public art installations that will beautify our village streets and attract more foot traffic.
Marathon Mayor Scott Chamberlin expressed gratitude for the state's investment, acknowledging Governor Hochul and the Department of State for their commitment to rural communities like ours. Senator Lea Webb also offered congratulations to the Village of Marathon, highlighting that this comprehensive investment will foster new businesses, revitalize historic buildings, and support housing development, ensuring Marathon continues its growth trajectory.
While this grant brings direct benefits to businesses, the overall revitalization efforts extend beyond commercial operations. The NY Forward funding also includes $1.277 million for enhancements at Lovell Field and the Marathon Civic Center, promising a new walking trail, picnic pavilion, pickleball court, and resurfaced courts. The historic Peck Memorial Library will receive $1 million for modernization and accessibility, and $540,000 will fund new duplex rental housing at 19-21 Cortland Street. Collectively, these projects will improve the quality of life for residents and create a more appealing environment for businesses, new residents, and visitors, aligning with the NY Forward program's goal to support smaller communities in attracting growth and prosperity.
