The American Legion to Host Ceremony on the Village Green

This Monday is Memorial Day. A day we set aside to honor those we lost in the various wars of our 250-year history.

My own family will pause to remember my great-great-grandfather Frank Swica, a WW2 gunner who was shot down over France in 1943. He was the top-gunner on the "Screwball" in the 511th Bomber Squadron, 351st Bomber. When the plane was shot down, his Lieutenant said Swica stayed in the plane and maintained firing on the enemy while his crewmates bailed out. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, and additional Army Awards. He is buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial in Liege, Belgium.

To honor our brave heroes, the Osco Robinson Post 617 American Legion is holding a ceremony at 10:00 AM on Monday on the Village Green. The ceremony will include setting a wreath on the Tioughnioga River to honor those lost at sea, followed by a procession up to the cemetery, where another wreath will be laid.

The Legion will be hosting a free hot dog luncheon following the ceremony.
