The Marathon Area Historical Society Prepares for America 250

The Historical Society started America 250 celebrations early this spring, bringing in two guest speakers, one in May and one in March. Their events continue through the summer and into early fall. Here are some of the past and upcoming events.

Town of Marathon and Lapeer Historian Laurie Tebbe recently spoke about Cortland County's Revolutionary War history at the CNY Living History Museum. She told NNToday she may do that program again here in Marathon, and the board just has to set a date.

Alongside the Alumni Banquet and Graduation weekend, the 1861 Building will be open on Saturday, June 27, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

MAHS is also preparing its quarterly newsletter, which will discuss the previous July 4th events in Marathon. Anyone who wants to receive a newsletter can become a member of the MAHS.

The official America 250 celebrations in town will coincide with the Union Fair on September 12. School groups, businesses, churches, and other organizations are encouraged to join the parade, which features 3 categories this year:

  • walkers

  • horses, carriages, and wagons

  • motorized vehicles
